3 Brushing Techniques for a Healthy Smile

February 11, 2025

To maintain good oral hygiene, there are some steps and processes that you can do. Some of these are flossing, mouthwash, and a well-balanced diet. Although the primary and effective method to ensure high-quality oral health is brushing. You can ask your dentist Goose Creek for assistance with the most recommended techniques for brushing, and which toothbrush and toothpaste are better for you and your family.

It is necessary to be clear that brushing is the most effective method to clean your teeth and remove tartar and plaque build-up.

How You Should Brush

Bass or Sulcular Technique

This is an excellent technique for those who suffer from periodontitis. When brushing with the Bass technique, the toothbrush bristles penetrate beneath the gum line to remove plaque before it forms into tartar and leads to dental problems like gum disease.

  • Hold the toothbrush parallel to your teeth with the bristles pointing toward your gums.
  • Move the bristles below the gum line while rotating the brush at a 45-degree angle.
  • Before moving to the next area, move the brush back and forth or make a tiny circular motion 15–20 times while applying mild pressure. You will be brushing two to three teeth at once.
  • Thoroughly brush the outside of each tooth, and then repeat the process on the side closest to the tongue.

Stillman Technique

It is very similar and may help you clean more between the teeth. It is recommended for patients with gingivitis. Move the brush toward the tooth’s chewing surface and use quick back-and-forth strokes. When using this method, half of the bristles should be on the tooth surface, and the other half should cover the gums.

Charter Technique

This method is ideal for patients with spaces between teeth, orthodontic appliances, and partial dentures. The position of the bristles is opposite to the Brass or Stillman Technique.

It brings happy tears to my eyes knowing that my smile is fixed. Dr. Jake worked for 2 1/2 hours repairing old, cracked fillings, sealed between my teeth. This weighed on my confidence for three years and I barely ever wanted to talk. My teeth are restored back to their original state and it’s unbelievable what a patient, and kind dentist can do for one’s confidence. I owe ya one, Dr Jake!"

Scheduled my elderly mother a new patient visit and every single staff member we were in contact with was EXTREMELY helpful and so sweet! I’m thinking of switching myself! We couldn’t be happier with this office!
