Root Canal Therapy

Do you have sensitive teeth? If so, this may be the first indication that you have a root canal. At North Rivers Dental Associates, we are committed to treating your root canal as soon as possible!

What is a Root Canal?

A root canal occurs when the center of the tooth—the pulp—is infected. The pulp is composed of nerve endings, blood vessels, and tissue. When the pulp becomes infected, you may experience sharp pain and tooth decay may advance.

Common Symptoms

You should be aware of the following symptoms for root canals and visit us right away:

  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Tender gums
  • Sore gums
  • Dark-colored teeth

How Does Therapy Work?

To determine if you have a root canal, your dentist will perform a comprehensive oral evaluation. An x-ray and digital images are captured to get a better idea of the location of the tooth and how your dentist can prepare for treatment.

On the day of the procedure, you will be provided with local or general anesthesia depending on your tolerance for pain. A drill is used to remove the pulp and the canal is cleansed and sealed with a rubber-like substance, called gutta percha. After treatment, make sure to heed the instructions from your doctor for a quick healing process!
