Tooth Care

It is essential that you are taking every precaution to preserve your natural teeth. At North Rivers Dental Associates, we strive to provide you with the best in dental care with state-of-the-art technology.

What is Tooth Decay?

Tooth decay occurs from a buildup of bacteria that turns into plaque. As plaque is left untreated, this white, sticky substance can cause your tooth to rot. To treat tooth decay, we provide sealants, fluoride treatments and mouth rinses to halt cavity progression.

X-Rays

With a comprehensive oral exam, we can effectively tend to your teeth. X-rays use radio-technology to get an in-depth view inside of your mouth and any trouble areas regarding your teeth.

X-rays or radiographs are used to detect any abnormalities, so we can make an informed diagnosis.

Care Tips

Children

Your child should visit the dentist within 6 months of their first tooth or by their first birthday. Teething is a natural response as your child’s teeth begin to emerge. Thumb-sucking is a common reflex among infants and promotes security for your child, but prolonged thumb-sucking can lead to crooked teeth.

Primary teeth begin to emerge by 3 years of age and permanent teeth are achieved by 12.

Women

There are many physical changes that occur in the female body—the menstrual cycle, pregnancy and childbirth. As hormone levels change with each transition, women are more susceptible to lesions, swollen gums and gum disease.

Seniors

If you are over the age of 60, seniors need to take special care of their teeth. Poor care can lead to hypertension, heart disease and diabetes among other conditions. Arthritis is a common condition among seniors and makes it challenging to practice good dental hygiene.

If you have dentures, we recommend brushing them with an abrasive toothpaste to clean them. Rinse your dentures in cool water with a product such as Efferdent and soak them overnight.

Nutrition

A healthy mouth starts from the beginning. Your child should consume foods that are rich in nutrients to increase great oral health or make their teeth stronger. Dairy is high in calcium and builds strong enamel for you and your child’s teeth. Vegetables and meats are high in minerals that support strong bone and gum health. Please help your child avoid sugary foods as this can cause cavities at an early age.
