Can You Prevent Enamel Erosion?

March 20, 2025

One of the benefits of preventive dentistry in Charleston, SC, is enamel protection. Even though your enamel is hailed as the hardest tissue in your body, it can still wear down. Its strength helps protect your teeth from premature wear and tear. Once your enamel erodes, you’ll experience increased tooth sensitivity and pain. Is enamel erosion preventable?

Can You Avoid Enamel Erosion?

What are The Signs of Enamel Erosion?

The signs of enamel wear depend on the severity of the erosion. Some of the symptoms include tooth sensitivity. In addition, when you consume foods that are either hot or cold, you will experience sharp pain. This is evident during the early stage of erosion.

Over time, as the enamel continues to wear out, you will notice tooth discoloration. This is because the next layer underneath the enamel is the dentin, and when the enamel wears away, the dentin will be exposed, making your teeth appear more yellow.

Other signs of enamel erosion are chips and cracks, indentations on your teeth, and your teeth looking smooth and shiny. The smoothness can be owed to mineral loss. Unfortunately, enamel erosion will increase your susceptibility to cavity formation and tooth decay.

How Can This Be Prevented?

Luckily, you can prevent enamel erosion by making sure you brush and floss your teeth every day and see your dentist once every six months for an oral exam and routine teeth cleaning.

You should also limit your consumption of acidic drinks and foods like sodas, citrus juices, and lemons. You might want to try a slice of cheese or a glass of milk to balance out the acids.

It brings happy tears to my eyes knowing that my smile is fixed. Dr. Jake worked for 2 1/2 hours repairing old, cracked fillings, sealed between my teeth. This weighed on my confidence for three years and I barely ever wanted to talk. My teeth are restored back to their original state and it’s unbelievable what a patient, and kind dentist can do for one’s confidence. I owe ya one, Dr Jake!"

Scheduled my elderly mother a new patient visit and every single staff member we were in contact with was EXTREMELY helpful and so sweet! I’m thinking of switching myself! We couldn’t be happier with this office!
